Karpathos sits far out in the Aegean, between Crete and Rhodes, and that isolation is exactly what has protected it. While much of Greece has modernised, Karpathos has held onto its identity. The mountain villages preserve traditions, dialects, and dress found nowhere else in the country, and the landscape shifts from turquoise coves to dramatic cliffs to golden hillsides within a few kilometres.

A Wedding Across the Villages of Karpathos
This was a wedding that belonged to the whole island. It moved from village to village across a single unforgettable day, each place adding its own chapter.
Two Villages, Two Preparations
The day began in two separate villages, as tradition dictates. The groom prepared in Lefkos, a coastal village on the western side of the island, surrounded by close friends and family. Traditional music filled the rooms, and emotions ran high as mantinades, the island’s signature rhyming couplets, were recited in his honour.
Meanwhile, the bride readied herself in Pigadia, the island’s main town. Her family helped her into her gown as the atmosphere shifted between joy and quiet emotion. Watching both preparations unfold, so different yet building toward the same moment, is exactly the kind of storytelling I live for.
A Ceremony in Mertonas
The ceremony took place in Mertonas, in a small, beautiful church nestled among lush trees. The setting felt sacred and intimate, sheltered by greenery and far removed from the outside world.
As the couple exchanged vows, their guests could not hold back tears of joy. The natural surroundings seemed to become part of the blessing itself, as though the island were quietly witnessing the union. These are the moments a documentary approach captures best, because nothing is staged. It is all simply real.
A Celebration in Aperi
After the ceremony, the celebration moved to Aperi, a village famous for its stunning views and rich cultural heritage. The reception was lively and full of heart. Guests shared a traditional Karpathian feast of local dishes, and, of course, more mantinades filled the air.
The music and dancing carried late into the night, blending Greek and Karpathian traditions seamlessly. This is where the soul of a Karpathos wedding truly reveals itself, in the shared joy of a community that celebrates together the way it has for generations.
Golden Hour in Olymbos, Karpathos
The following day, we ventured to Olymbos, the most famous of all Karpathian villages and one of the last places in Europe to preserve its ancient customs so completely. The couple wandered its narrow, winding streets, pausing against colourful houses and weathered stone walls. Every corner offered something new to photograph, the whole village alive with colour and history.
As the day drew to a close, we climbed to a small church perched on a cliff, high above the Aegean. There, against the drama of the setting sun and the endless blue below, we created some of the most powerful images of the entire wedding. It was the perfect close to a celebration of love, heritage, and the raw beauty of this extraordinary island.

My approach to a wedding in Karpathos, and anywhere in Greece, is documentary and unscripted. I do not interrupt real moments to arrange poses or work from a rigid shot list. Instead, I stay present and largely unseen, capturing genuine emotion, tradition, and connection as the day unfolds naturally.
I photograph both film and digital when I’m asked, combining the timeless warmth of 35mm film with the versatility of digital. I am also based in Karpathos for part of the year, which means I know its villages, its light, and its customs intimately. That familiarity lets me anticipate moments that a visiting photographer would simply miss.
