A Mystical Journey; Autumn in Pelion, Greece
Early November treated us well as we greeted Autumn in Pelion, Greece. A two-day exploration of its moody autumn landscapes. The journey began in the picturesque village of Portaria. Cobblestone streets and traditional stone houses offered a warm welcome despite the overcast sky. Mist rolled through the narrow pathways, adding an air of mystery as we set off toward Chania.
The drive to Chania was a blend of dense forests and winding roads. Surrounded by vibrant autumn leaves shimmering under the muted light. Pelion’s natural beauty took center stage, with the clouds and mist creating a dreamlike atmosphere. Arriving in Chania, the crisp mountain air greeted us as we paused to admire the the misty environment before continuing our adventure.
By midday, we reached Mylopotamos Beach.
Known for its stunning turquoise waters and dramatic cliffs, the beach looked surreal under the heavy clouds. The sea, usually vibrant blue, was muted and reflective, blending harmoniously with the somber sky. Walking along the shoreline, we embraced the serenity of the scene. Captured in the soft roar of waves and the faint mist lingering over the cliffs. Autumn in Pelion and particularly the part that faces Aegean means that you won’t see many people.
As the day waned, we made our way back through Tsagkarada. This charming village, nestled in lush greenery, felt otherworldly in the fading light. Its centuries-old plane trees seemed even more majestic shrouded in mist. The drive back through Chania and onward to Portaria was quiet yet captivating. With the twilight settling gently over the mountains and trying to make its way through the thick clouds.
As the first day of our adventure drew to a close, we made a final stop before returning to Portaria.
At a high-altitude vantage point, we paused to take in the sweeping panorama of Volos, the shimmering city below. Even with the moody skies and the soft veil of mist, the view was breathtaking. The lights of Volos were almost ready to start flickering.
This quiet moment offered a sense of perspective, both literally and figuratively. Standing above the city, surrounded by the cool mountain air, we reflected on the journey so far. The vibrant colors of autumn, the mystical charm of the mist, and the rugged beauty of Pelion had created an experience we wouldn’t soon forget.
As we lingered, watching the transition from day to evening, the magic of the moment was heightened by the stillness of the mountains. The only sounds were the rustling of leaves and the occasional distant hum of life below. It was a perfect way to end the first day. Capturing the serenity and grandeur of Autumn in Pelion, in one stunning view.
With our hearts full and our cameras brimming with memories, we descended back to Portaria. Ready to rest and prepare for another day of exploration. This pause above Volos served as a reminder of the beauty that lies not just in the destinations, but also in the quiet moments in between. Pelion continued to show us its soul, one panoramic vista at a time.
Day Two: Exploring the Soulful Villages of South Pelion
Our second day in Pelion began with an eagerness to explore the southern region. Where the charm of coastal and mountain villages blends seamlessly. With mist still clinging to the landscape and a gentle rain enhancing the earthy aromas of autumn, we set off, weaving through the seaside villages.
Passing through Agria, with its quaint harbor and serene seaside vibe, we soaked in the peacefulness of this coastal gem. The mist softened the edges of the sea and sky, creating an ethereal atmosphere that made even the simplest scenes feel magical. As we continued along the coastal road, each village offered its own unique character, with stone houses, narrow streets, and colorful fishing boats dotting the shoreline.
Our journey eventually led us inland to Milies.
One of the most picturesque villages in Pelion. Nestled among lush greenery and shrouded in mist, Milies seemed like a scene from a storybook. The historic charm of its stone houses and cobblestone paths felt timeless, while the gentle rain added a touch of romance to the setting. We wandered through the village, taking in the tranquil beauty and capturing the subtle interplay of light and shadow.
Not far from Milies, Vizitsa awaited with its equally captivating allure.
The village exuded elegance with its preserved mansions and panoramic views of the misty hills. The calmness of the surroundings invited us to slow down, savoring the peaceful rhythm of life in these mountain villages.
We returned to Milies to conclude our journey at a local tavern, where the warmth of traditional Greek hospitality embraced us. The crackling fire and hearty dishes of local cuisine were the perfect end to our exploration. As we reflected on the day, it became clear that South Pelion’s beauty lies not only in its landscapes but in the stories and emotions it evokes.
This short trip was a reminder of nature’s beauty in every season, especially when seen through the lens of shifting weather and mood. Autumn in Pelion offers a soulful retreat, perfect for those who seek tranquility and raw natural beauty.
